Tracing Your Immigrant Roots: Home

A guide to help navigate sources for searching for your immigrant ancestors.

About this guide

This research guide is to help those looking for information about individuals and groups who came from other countries to settle in North Carolina. The scarcity of land, financial opportunity, religious freedom, and political persecution were the major factors that drove immigrants to America from the sixteenth century through the beginning of World War II. For information about people forced into slavery, please see our research guide, Researching African American Ancestors.

This guide provides tools and strategies for researching your immigrant ancestors in North Carolina. Included are links to print and digital resources from the N.C. Government & Heritage Library at the State Library of North Carolina, as well as other resources outside the GHL.
