More than half a million students participate in the National History Day® (NHD) program each year. With NHD, students choose a historical topic from any time period or geographical location that is connected to NHD's annual theme. After choosing their topic, students conduct research using libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews, and visits to historic sites. Students then analyze their sources to form a historical argument about the significance of their topic and present their findings in one of five project types: a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website.
